Clinical: Radiology, Imaging, CT and Ultrasound - Career Choices

Job Description:

There are multiple imaging techniques to visualize structures inside the body. Radiology / Imaging Technologists may be trained in one or several procedures:

Radiology Technologist (also called a X-Ray Technologist)

  • Operates the radiographic equipment to create images of bones and internal organs. Positions the patient, and protects them from unnecessary radiation exposure. Works under the supervision of a Radiologist.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist (also called a Nuc Med Tech)

  • Administers radioactive chemicals into the patient’s body, for specialized imaging procedures.

CT Technologist (also called Computed Tomography)

  • Operates Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) scan equipment to create images of internal body structures. May include administering substances to enhance the images.

MRI Technologist (also called Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

  • Operates Nuclear Magnetic Resonance equipment to create detailed images of internal body structures.

Mammography Technologist (also called Mammo Tech)

  • Specializes in using imaging techniques for screening and diagnosis of breast cancer and other disorders of breast tissue.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (also called Diagnostic Ultrasound Tech)

  • Uses ultrasound equipment to examine internal structures. Most commonly used in obstetrics to visualize the fetus.
